The CATABUS system provides an average of 33,500 trips daily, or just over 7 million annually, to those living and working in our community. As measured by riders, CATA has the distinction of being the third largest transit system in Pennsylvania, behind only SEPTA in Philadelphia and the Port Authority in Pittsburgh. In terms of rides per capita, the Centre Region is the third most “transit-intensive” small urban area in the nation, exceeded only by Ames, Iowa, and Athens, Georgia.
All of CATA’s 64 fixed-route CATABUS vehicles operate on clean compressed natural gas. CATA was the first transit system on the East Coast to have moved from a fleet operating on diesel fuel to one operating by alternative fuel, and specifically CNG.
The CATACOMMUTE program provides a family of transportation services - rideshare matching, vanpools, and Guaranteed Ride Home are just a few - for those who commute long distances into the State College and surrounding areas for work in an effort to help them find alternative easy and economical commute alternatives. Between 2009 and 2011, CATACOMMUTE services have pulled 288,892 vehicles off the road and have saved commuters 373,300 gallons of gasoline and $1.1 million in commuting costs and the environment 7.36 million few pounds of CO2 greenhouse gas emissions.
For additional information on CATA and its various services, please visit the CATA website at www.catabus.com or call (814) 238-CATA(2282).
CATA will also have one of their CNG busses on display at the festival and will be offering free rides on their Blue Loop route for those that would like to take tours of the Penn State Morning Star Home or Eco-Machine!
