Penny Eifrig, a Lemont native, and her husband Chris, from
Germany, have long had a passion for environmentalism. When they created their
children’s and adult clothing company KNÜTES (www.knuetes.com)
in 1994, they were one of the early pioneers in using Polartec recycled fleece.
Their gear is designed to last long and be passed down from kid to kid and is
produced locally in Williamsport. Their
patented doublegloves, mittens you can hold hands in or wear alone with quick
hand access, sold over 2000 pairs in 7 minutes on its QVC debut in 1995.
Penny also created an environmentally conscious publishing
company in 2006, Eifrig Publishing (www.eifrigpublishing.com), which features
kids books focusing on topics such as the environment, self-esteem, body image,
and other genres, printed on FSC-certified recycled paper in the USA. She features many local authors, including
Phoebe Link, Susan F. Smith, Ronald Smith, Mark Ross, Neal Hemmelstein, Susan
Russell, Ron “Doc” Wilkerson, and MaryBeth Bamat, as well as many authors from
around the world. She started a young
authors contest last year to encourage writing: every story entered in the
YACK-Young Authors -Creative Kids contest gets published as an online flip book
and the winners’ books are published with all proceeds going to a charity of
their choice.
“Our aim is to create products that we truly believe in,
that are good for our kids, our environment, and our communities. Our aim is
not to become global players, but to be strong and ethical partners in our
communities.“
